Tanning In The News
Lack Of Vitamin 'D' in The UK - 19,000 people
a year prematurely die from cancer in the UK due to insufficient
vitamin D (the most important source of which is UV light). In the
USA the economic burden due to Vitamin D insufficiency from inadequate
exposure to solar UVB is estimated at $4056 billion in 2004, wheras
that for excess UV irradiance is estimated at $67 million... This
means that health problems due to lack of vitamin D are more than
60 times more expensive to the country than health problems caused
by too much exposure to UV.
Cold weather sends students to tanning beds
- Why use a tanning bed, when the sun charges nothing? When 20 minutes
in a bed equates to a day at the beach, students are enticed by
the convenience and ease. "I use the tanning bed when I want
to look tan for an event. Using 12 minutes of my day to get a tan
that takes me a good one or two days in the sun is well worth it,"
says Kristin Sagona, a business major. >> More

Tanning Bed Lotions Ensure Safe Tan - A recent
study shows that thousands of people die each year of cancers possibly
caused by too little sun exposure which leads to vitamin D deficiency.
Our indoor lifestyles and sunscreens diminish vitamin D production
because the body gets vitamin D from UV light and not from foods.
Vitamin D can also be derived from indoor tanning beds. Use a common
sense and tan wisely and in moderation, and you will look gorgeous
and healthy. >> More

USA Salon applies acrylic nails to bleeding fingers
- Burgess, 47, went to a salon to have a new set of acrylic fingernails
applied. The salon had difficulty removing the set of acrylic nails
it had applied during Burgess's last visit, and finally removed
them using a grinding wheel, leaving Burgess's fingers bleeding.
The salon then applied a new set of acrylic nails over Burgess's
bleeding nail beds. Over the next five weeks, Burgess' fingers became
painful and swollen. She was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, and a
portion of her right index finger was amputated. Her medical expenses
totaled $18,000. >> More
